New Band of the Day: Diamond Rugs

Diamond Rugs is made up of members from Black Lips, Deer Tick, Los Lobos, Dead Confederate and Six Finger Satellite. Not exactly rock royalty, maybe, but these are obviously guys who know their game. Individual members have collaborated with artists from Tom Waits to Paul Simon to The Replacements and can boast multiple Grammy Awards and TV slots with David Letterman, Jay Leno and our very own Jools Holland.

The music is not dissimilar to the scuzzy rock ‘n’ roll of groups like Black Lips, but this is a more mature and varied sound.

Whilst Black Lips crash through songs at whirlwind pace, Diamond Rugs are often more like a gentle breeze, with ska influences and beats tempering the obvious heavier influences.

'Totally Lonely' sounds almost like an early Leonard Cohen song; 'Country Mile' is a country music pastiche that doesn’t make us want to shoot ourselves and new single Hightail is slurred, grimy blues-rock at its best.

Single 'Hightail' and debut album Diamond Rugs are both released 25th March 2013 on Partisan Records.
