Dirty BeachesDirty Beaches are not for the faint-hearted. Alex Zhang Hungtai, who started his one-man band in Montreal in 2005, makes ultra-dark, repetitive synth music. Releases range from drone instrumentals to film scores.

2011 single 'Speedway King' sounds like Joy Division undergoing a slow and painful collective breakdown – all grinding, grating synth, sparse, agitated vocals and repetitive military drums. The accompanying video – shot and directed by Hungtai – is similarly disorienting, if not right downright disturbing: full of flashing and rotating off-centre, black and white video clips, some borderline pornographic.

New single 'Love is the Devil', according to Hungtai’s comments on the single’s Youtube video, was written ‘crying my fucking eyes out… and punching myself in the face.’ The instrumental track is still dark, but more restrained - haunting rather than harrowing.

Conceptual double-album Drifters / Love is the Devil will be released 20th May 2013 on Zoo Records. UK / EU tour dates are available here
