New Band of the Day: Movits!

You may be familiar with electro swing, but what about hip hop swing? What about Swedish hip hop swing?

It’s weirdly excellent. Watching Movits!’ lead singer Johan Rensfeldt is kind of like watching a more cheerful, blond, yet incomprehensible Scroobius Pip (unless you speak Swedish). He’s backed up by an energetic swinging band, with brother Anders (electronics) and saxophonist Joakim ‘One-Take’ Nilsson as the permanent members.

Single Fel Dev Av Garden from the debut album Äppelknyckarjazz is a good place to start with this niche trio. Once you get your head around the alien vocals, the thirties big band rhythms take centre stage. And if you’re still scratching your head, all you have to do is check out their slick music videos to ‘get’ their concept. Or watch them live if you’re lucky.

From the new album, Ut Ur Min Skalle (Out Of My Head to all Anglophones), latest single Sammy Davis Jr. is a great next step. Not least because of the title track references, which mean you will be able to sing along with at least two of the words. Gene Kelly and James Brown crop up, too. (We can only assume that the boys think highly of them.)

In their own words, Movits! will bring you “django guitar, windy street swing; music for both art directors and your mum.” Go on, we know you’re curious.
