Alex Clare illustrates the arduous strife facing a new artist.
He has talent in abundance, but for whatever reason, it hasn’t hit everyone’s radar just yet.
Separating Clare from his contemporaries is his choice of production. His 2011 debut album, The Lateness Of The Hour, produced by Diplo and Switch, may have failed to impact on the charts, but he rightly ranks as one of the most intriguing freshmen around.
Toying with a hybrid of different genres, it’s almost impossible to stereotype his music; soul, blues, dubstep and dancehall are all identifiable in what he creates.
By now, listeners are probably most familiar with his bountiful baseline track 'Too Close' which raced up the UK charts on the back of a massive Microsoft ad campaign - nearly two years after the initial sessions for his debut album took place.
So, there’s hope for the former estate agent. With the renewed interest in his music, the 26- year-old is heading back in the studio to start work on a new EP, with a reported U.S. tour also in the works.
What Clare creates may be difficult to pigeonhole, but it’s what makes him so refreshing. After all, testaments to the same Euro-pop tune are wearing a bit now, aren’t they? If soul-saturated croons of hurt are what you’ve been waiting for, I recommend that you give this guy a spin.
