Derby four-piece Alright The Captain are joining the likes of And So I Watch You From Afar and You Slut! In bringing instrumental rock to the fore once again. Their experimental sound fuses elements of jazz, math rock and post-rock in an impressive display of technical brilliance.

'Honey Badger' is a track that epitomises their style. Taken from their debut album Snib, the track perfectly shows the chaotic, bi-polar nature of the band as they effortlessly shift between melodic, meandering guitars and storming, in your face aggression. The track is filled with finely crafted riffs that show off their talents while remaining listenable.

The chaotic elements are emphasised on track ‘Rostov Could Get It’. The spiky, hard-hitting bass is the driving force, which is quickly joined by the frantic guitar riffs with it always verging on the right side of chaos.

Admittedly, instrumental rock can be quite the acquired taste, but Alright the Captain can safely claim to be standouts within the genre and are a band well worth your time. Whether or not you can appreciate it, the genius of the band is plain to see.
