New Band of The Day: Big Sixes

Buckinghamshire outfit Big Sixes certainly aren’t the happiest band around, but they sure know how to write good tunes. Evoking memories of the likes of Joy Division and White Lies, Big Sixes play moody indie rock packed with hooks and the maturity of industry veterans.

The band have kept a deliberately low profile since emerging, maintaining an air of mystery and revealing very little about themselves. Yet their profile continues to grow, which considering the cryptic nature of the band, is a testament to the strength of their music.

Their debut song The Devil Makes Work For Idol Tongues grabbed the attention of listeners and set tongues wagging. The energetic instrumentals are complimented perfectly by front-man Charlie Costello, who’s intelligent and infectious lyrics show he has a clear affinity for song writing. It is a brilliant first effort from the band, and you could be forgiven for thinking the band were a greatly experienced outfit, instead of industry newcomers.

The Bands second release proves that The Devil Makes Work For Idol Tongues wasn’t simply a fluke, with an equally impressive effort.  Salvation, Salvation sees the band flex their muscles a bit. The song begins with a fittingly simple riff over which Costello states: ‘Today is the perfect day to feel alive, so why the fuck do i feel so dead inside?’ This relative calm is then shattered as the drums kick in; creating a track that is pulsating, yet distinctly haunting.

With their debut EP released this month for free, expect big things from the Bucks Boys as they look to push for the success that they deserve.
