For over 20 years London label Ninja Tune has been releasing ground-breaking tunes on an unsuspecting world.
Formed by dance legends Coldcut much of the label’s sound-clash ideology can be traced back to the duo’s Solid Steel radio show on Kiss FM, it starting on the then pirate station in 1988.
In the early 90s the label alongside Warp and Mo’Wax formed the Holy Trinity of ground-breaking, forward thinking dance labels. Early releases by Coldcut under the DJ Food moniker acted as the blueprint for much of the breakbeat and trip-hop genres to follow.
While the label’s acts have always followed a similar ethos the music released comes from a wide palette of aural colours. From the cartoonish electronic shenanigans of Mr Scruff, to the haunting, sample-driven sounds of Amon Tobin, to the heartbreaking jazz-fuelled sounds of the Cinematic Orchestra and the soulful electronic folk of Bonobo.
Regardless of fads, fashions Ninja Tune is always ahead of the pack innovating and releasing great tunes. But don’t take our word for it, check out our introduction to the label:
