You may know him as the front-man to pop-punk outfit Bowling For Soup, but Jaret Reddick is also part of People on Vacation alongside Smile Smile guitarist and vocalst Ryan Hamilton.

People on VacationThe band released "The Carry On EP" at the end of 2011 and are supporting Jaret and Erik Chandler on the Bowling for Soup acoustic tour, the duo will also play their first ever UK headline date at London’s Borderline on Sunday, March 25th.

TNS caught up with Ryan Hamilton ahead of the tour:

People on Vacation began when Jaret saw Hamilton’s band, ‘Smile Smile,’ perform at SXSW a few years ago.

He explained: “I gave him a CD after the show. Before we knew it, Smile Smile was on tour with Bowling For Soup! Strange combination I know... BUT much to our surprise the BFS fans embraced Smile Smile and Jaret and I became fast friends.”

“I approached him one day after the tour and asked what he thought about getting together and writing some songs. I was curious to see what it would sound like if combined our two different worlds/sounds."

“We got together and wrote a song. It went so well, we wrote and recorded 15 more in about 10 days. It was, for lack of a cooler word, magical.”

The name, “People on Vacation” came from a song-writing game that the band plays.

“Jaret and I are both involved in a weekly song writing game that Bob Schnieder hosts via email.

“He gives us (and about 20 other songwriters) a phrase, and we implement that phrase into a song, record it and 'reply all'... it's a really cool exercise."

“'People On Vacation' was a Song Game suggestion by Jaret. Shortly after he suggested it, he mentioned it to me as a name for our band... and if you didn't know, I really liked it.”

Hamilton considers POV to be a ‘indie-pop’ band. He explained: “I like to break it down like this: Jaret plays Pop/Punk in BFS. Smile Smile is considered Indie/Folk. POV is definitely not Punk or Folk music, so I consider us to be Indie/Pop. Makes sense, right?”

But how does POV’s music compare to Bowling for Soup’s? Hamilton thinks, “BFS has a completely different sound from POV. However, you can't mistake Jaret's voice and he definitely has a song-writing style.”

Hamilton continued: “So, I don't think we're anything like BFS. We do, however, have the pleasure of getting to use the best parts of Mr. Reddick… that doesn't sound right at all.”

Hamilton’s influences are Bob Dylan & Tom Petty. “I think Jaret likes metal. I'm not really sure what ‘metal’ is...” he said.

“But I think it has something to do with playing instruments made of steel,” he sarcastically added.

Hamilton has a positive outlook for POV’s future. He hopingly said: “Well, other than taking over the entire musical world... we will be playing more shows and releasing more music. Wink face! Seriously though.”
