After a five-year break from recording music, Red Hot Chili Peppers made a welcome return to the radio waves with new album ‘I’m With You.’ With a new album comes a new sell-out tour, met with much anticipation by fans across the UK for nine dates in November.
The band was joined for the UK leg of their tour by Los Angeles-based Fool’s Gold, who brought a unique blend of African and American pop influences and a penchant for singing in Hebrew. Admittedly, this isn’t the sort of music to get the crowds going, but their passion for music was infectious, their style creative, and they at least got everyone’s feet-tapping.
After a 20-minute gap with an increasingly restless crowd, the Chili Peppers finally took to Birmingham’s LG Arena proving why their brand of rock was made to fill stadiums.
They kicked off proceedings with ‘Monarchy of Roses’, which carries much more resonance live than as a recording and really holds its own amongst their better-known material.
That said, ‘Dani California’ and ‘Can’t Stop’ brought an undeniable jolt of energy to the arena, with an impressive stage presence from Klinghoffer. Meanwhile, only two more tracks from the new record were played overall. They were fairly well received, but lacked the aura of excitement and innovation which the band has been renowned for in their earlier years, and which came through in their tracks from previous albums.
The encore was an explosive jam with a focus on drums leading to ‘Around the World’ and the much-awaited ‘Give it Away’, before a final jam between Flea and Klinghoffer.
While the tour was more of a greatest hits set list, this met the demands of fans after such a significant break from music and was executed to perfection. Red Hot Chili Peppers clearly have a lot of love for their supporters, and seeing such an acclaimed group live is an opportunity not to be missed.
