Background: Lana Del Rey aka Lizzy Grant is sexy. Not only in image but also in her music. There’s a glitz and glamour to her that suggests an affinity with Sinatra era America whilst her self-made video for ‘Video Games’ points to a modern DIY aesthetic. She started ten years ago but any record of that will be hard to find. Her self-titled EP has since been deleted. Regarding her moniker, Grant disregards it as a creative ploy. Unlike the rather over bloated Gaga, Grant is the same person no matter what her name is and her music sounds just as genuine.
‘Diet Mtn Dew’ is a sexy bit of melancholic soul whilst ‘Kinda Outta Luck’ begins with as much drama and allure as Nancy Sinatra’s ‘Bang Bang.’ ‘Video Games’ is her most high profile track so far and it’s unsurprising. It’s a minimal piece of melancholy. A lone piano echoes like a funeral march whilst Grant’s voice is sultry and bewitching. It also includes her self-penned “Frank Sinatra Strings.” We assume that she’s referencing the shimmer of the instrument which ripples in an almost fairy tale like aura. We’re quite smitten with Grant. The prospect of a new double A side in October is all the more exciting.
