The recent resurrection of the surf aesthetic has created captivating sounds from the likes of The Drums, Surfer Blood and Best Coast.
Rarely has a more aptly named record been released than Beat Connection’s debut album Surf Noir – shimmering psychedelic guitar melodies are dragged about by an ethereal electronic undercurrent.
Jordan Koplowitz met Reed Juenger and they began making some next level beats in Garageband. Reed - born in Massachusetts - had moved to Seattle with the half-baked notion of escaping the town he went to high school in. Jordan had grown up in a Seattle satellite town Bellingham, a place best known for its snowboarding, outdoors, hippies and marijuana.
Between school classes and parties, instrumental tracks with vague references to M83 and Crystal Castles began to emerge. Yet over time the duo realised that melody, verses and choruses exist in pop music for a reason. So they moved on from Garageband, started DJ-ing; things went full circle, their tastes changed, they started writing more music, paid some bills with DJ fees and bought some better equipment.
The result is forward-thinking but classic surf-pop. The duo unleash their fantasy-pop with some live dates in May following the release of Surf Noir in April.
