Golden Galore: Why some people like to be peed on during sex

Fancy a bit of water sports? If anybody ever asks you that when it looks like they might be into a hookup, the water sports they're talking about don't exactly involve physical activity - at least, not in the way we normally intend it.

Water sports (including the infamous “golden shower”) is in fact a slang term for sexual arousal provoked through urine. “Piss play” is a more direct term for the phenomenon. For people affected by urophilia, as it is scientifically called, the thought or sight of urine or the act of urination itself is sexually gratifying.

As stated in a 1982 edition of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry by Dr R. Denson, urophilia - like most other paraphilias - plays upon sexual arousal on many different levels.

Urophiliacs usually get their jollies from urinating on or being urinated on by another person. In certain cases, it can go as far as bathing in urine, drinking urine (as is also practiced as part of some cults and rituals without deriving any sexual pleasure). Some people can even become sexually aroused by smelling people in urine-soaked clothes. Urine itself can be fathomed as a fetishistic object, as can feet or plants. However, it can also be understood as a method to get more intimate with a partner and capture their real essence.

In other cases, the manifestations of this paraphilia are slightly more subtle - for example, there are people that are sexually aroused by having a full bladder; something that could easily resemble the principles of female squirting, therefore be purely anatomical in its essence.

Similarly, some people are sexually attracted to someone else who has a full bladder, also known as bladder desperation’, or people who have wet themselves. The latter is connected to a sense of humiliation and domination, so can easily relate to other power-seeking paraphilias. In this case it should be labeled as ‘uromasochism’ or ‘urosadism’, because it serves masochistic and/or sadistic purposes.

It is generally speculated that these fetishes are developed during the early years of a person's life. For example, a child who was repeatedly forced to hold their urine or who was frequently left in dirty nappies could develop this fetish. There are also cases of children that often witnessed their parent's urination and therefore developed a longing for it in their sexually active years.

This practice is slowly becoming less taboo, as it seems to be a very present fetish within pop culture. Almodovar, the notorious Spanish director, features a golden shower scene in his campy movie “Pepi Luci, Bom and Other Girls Like Mom," where girls are taught the wonders of pee in the middle of an innocent knitting class. Celebrities like the Puerto Rican popstar Ricky Martin stated that he enjoyed ‘golden showers’ in an interview with the music magazine Blender: “I love giving the golden shower… I've done it before in the shower. It's like so sexy, you know, the temperature of your body and the shower water is very different."

Ricky Martin is really just one of many, as is shown by how swamped the internet is with forums and websites where urophiliacs get together to share their stories and - excuse the pun - pee their pants with fun anecdotes and videos.

If you’re into it, check out to make your way out of the water closet and meet a pee guy or pee girl. Also try to chat with Dr. Trickles, Bound2Burst or Miss Piss.

Welcome to the oasis.
