A female journalist who was assaulted by rapper, producer, and former N.W.A member Dr Dre has criticised the recent biopic Straight Outta Compton for failing to show his abusive treatment of women.

In 1991, Dee Barnes was attacked by the rapper (real name Andre Young), following the airing of a hip-hop show she was presenting which had ended with a video clip of former member Ice Cube insulting the other members of N.W.A.

Barnes recently wrote for Gawker about the incident, saying that despite not wanting to see a realistic portrayal of the assault, she was shocked not to see any reference to it in the film.

"The truth is too ugly for a general audience... but what should have been addressed is that it occurred... Like many of the women that knew and worked with N.W.A., I found myself a casualty of Straight Outta Compton’s revisionist history."

She claims 'Straight Outta Compton' suggests that N.W.A's misogynistic lyrics were the extent to their abuse of women, despite Dr Dre's former girlfriend Michel'le and rapper Tairrie B also being assaulted by the rapper. In a recent interview with Vladtv, Michel'le said that throughout their six-year relationship she "got beat on and told to sit down and shut up."

The film's director, F. Gary Gray, is the same cameraman behind the clip of Ice Cube insulting his former groupmates, which is partly why Barnes believes the incident was omitted. "Gary has been reluctant to address N.W.A.’s misogyny and Dre’s attack on me in interviews", she wrote. "I think a huge reason that Gary doesn’t want to address it is because then he’d have to explain his part in history. He’s obviously uncomfortable for a reason."

Barnes also wrote about the objectification of women in the movie, pointing out the considerable omission of key female collaborators who contributed to N.W.A's success, whilst the majority of the women are depicted "naked in a hotel room or dancing in the background".

Straight Outta Compton, which is released in the UK on August 28, has made almost £50 million worldwide as of August 17th.
