2007

Nov. 1: 21-year old British student, Meredith Kercher, is murdered in the Italian flat she shared with American student Amanda Knox and two Italian women.

Nov. 6: Knox and her then-boyfriend Rafaele Sollecito, are arrested along with Diya “Patrick” Lumumba – the Congolese owner of a pub that Knox occasionally worked at.

Nov. 20: Lumumba is released from jail based on a lack of evidence. A fourth suspect – Rudy Hermann Guede, from the Ivory Coast – is coincidentally arrested in Germany for travelling without a train ticket.

Dec . 6: Police claim Guede’s bloody fingerprints were found on Kercher’s pillow. Guede is extradited to Italy to face murder charges.

Dec. 14: Kercher’s funeral in London

 

2008

Oct, 28: Geude is sentenced to 30 years in jail which is reduced in 2009 in return for him agreeing to a fast-track trial. Knox and Sollecito are indicted on charges of murder and sexual assault.

 

2009

Jan, 16: The trial of Knox and Sollecito begins.

Jun, 12: Knox claims whilst testifying that police beat her during her initial interrogation – explaining her pointing the finger at Patrick Lumumba.

Dec, 5: Knox and Sollecito are found guilty. Knox is sentenced to 26 years in prison, Sollecito to 25.

 

2010

Nov, 8: Knox is ordered to stand trial for slandering police officers during the murder investigation.

Nov, 24: Appeals trials for Knox and Sollecito open in Italy.

Dec, 18: Knox is permitted a review of forensic evidence used in her conviction.

 

2011

Jun, 18: A jail-mate of Guede’s tells the appeal court that Guede told him Knox and Sollecito were innocent, and that an unnamed accomplice killed Kercher.

Jun, 29: Much of the DNA evidence used in Knox’s conviction is found to be unreliable by an independent forensic report.

Oct, 3: am: Knox makes an emotional plea for acquittal to the appeals court, telling them: “I am not who they say I am...I did not do the things they say I did. I did not kill, I did not rape, I did not steal. I was not there at the time.”

Oct, 3: pm: Knox and Sollecito are cleared of the murder of Meredith Kercher. Knox is ordered to pay 22,000 Euros in compensation to Lumumba.
