Whilst Graduate Fashion Week is all about celebrating emerging British talent, it's also home to a whole array of incredible international designers too.

Katie Krueger (the designer behind the brand Kate Alexandra) is a fifth year student at The College of Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan, and her work had travelled all the way from the states to be displayed at GFW. Her handbags were creative and eye-catching, so we were desperate to know the story behind her designs.

Her work is incredibly creative and her attention to detail is clear. Each piece is its own piece of architecture - truly proving that fashion is a form of art. The collection itself is called Barcelona Bliss, and this Spanish DNA runs through the very core of the collection.

Katie's inspiration not only came from the Spanish city of Barcelona, and also closer to home in Louisana. "My inspiration for the collection was a trip that I took to Barcelona, Spain and New Orleans," she says. "The beautiful details and colours in every building; paying attention to everyone's daily routine, their morning stop for coffee on the way to work. Flower shops on every corner, people stopping on their way home to buy flowers for their loved ones. The beautiful architecture and bold colours in New Orleans (that I discovered were actually from before the Louisiana Purchase, when the state was under Spanish rule). Putting those heavy details into something a little more ordinary like a handbag, carrying that beautiful history and memories with you everywhere you go."

Despite living in the US Katie is no stranger to London, having studied at The London College of Fashion back in 2017. This is where she first heard about GFW, and was delighted to be involved this year.

"It was amazing having my work displayed in GFW," she says. "Allowing for my work to be shown across the world - it's such an honour. I got involved with GFW through my teacher Aki Choklat; he asked if he could bring my work to the show and I said yes, of course! I did attend the London College of Fashion previously in 2017, so I had heard about GFW in London and it is truly an incredible honour to be a part of it."

So, for someone as talented as Katie - what are her plans for the future? Well, she's still in university for now: "My plans for the future are to continue finishing school part-time. I would love to continue making handbags; they're my favourite work to make! I just had an interview at a company here in Michigan designing and assembling tradeshow/autoshow displays and signs! Fingers crossed - wish me luck!"

We're wishing Katie all the luck in the world, but with a talent like hers - somehow we don't think she'll need it.
