GFW19: Bold, bright, beautiful eye makeup takes centre stage

One of the most striking trends of Graduate Fashion Week so far: bold eye makeup. Amongst more neutral styles, the Solent University makeup students have gone for it. And we want more.
It’s been a trend this year in the worldwide fashion world – especially since AW18 Fashion Week – and with the sun out, colours are out too. From festivals to the street, people are stepping outside their comfort zone and trying new bolder styles - just because they can.
And although it's long-been a strong festival trend (for more see this piece by our Beauty editor Francesca Thompson-Smith) bright colours and bold makeup is no longer constrained to field-based music events.

Look at trend-setter Fashion Editor (and GFW18 alumni) Jamie Windust, for instance. Their bold makeup is now famous, but the covers of their award-winning magazine FRUITCAKE last year were already announcing the colour revolution:
At this year's Graduate Fashion Week, there are clear 80s and punk vibes, with a celebration of eccentricity. It's not a lacklustre copy of years gone by, though: makeup artists have reinterpreted the style with a very modern flair.
Think Studio 54 meets Stargate Atlantis. Vivacious purples, pinks, greens, and shiny golds and silvers are impactful and do more than complement the garments - they sublime them.

Bold eyeliners and eye shadows are empowering people and acting as a reminder of how exciting fashion is - and exactly why we’re in love with it.
