There's often dispute across the country about where fish and chips really hail from. Is it the pebbly seaside town of Brighton on the south coast, or is it London where the first fish and chip shop was born? Some even argue that it's actually Lancashire, up north. Whitby, on the North Yorkshire coast, also gets a strong look-in.

One thing we can all agree on however, is that fish and chips are a national delicacy.

Such a British institution are fish and chips that the seaside treat has now got its own national holiday (well, sort of) - Friday 7th June is officially National Fish and Chips Day, and Sarson's vinegar has teamed up with London-based Poppies Fish and Chips to bring us a celebratory drink with a twist.

If there's one thing us Brits like as much as a good old chippie takeaway - it's a gin and tonic to wash it down with, and Sarsons Vinegar and Poppies Fish and Chips have had the ingenious idea to combine the two. Taking the quintessential G&T and mixing it up with a twist of vinegar puts a fresh (and tasty) spin on a classic beverage.

It might not sound like your thing, but everything is worth a try, right? And that's why Poppies are giving away the cocktails for free on Friday, so that you have a chance to try them out.

Unfortunately, the free cocktails are only available in London - but if you can't get to the capital to try out the concoction, then it's easy enough to make at home following this recipe:

Vin & Tonic method:

- 25ml Gin

- 15ml dry Vermouth

- Juice of half a lemon

- 25ml Sarson’s shrub

To make the shrub:

- 250ml Sarson's Malt Vinegar

- 375ml water

- 500g sugar

- 1 bunch of dill

- Zest of 4 lemons

- 60g drained capers OR 200g of cooked peas

What to do:

- Bring the vinegar, water and sugar to the boil

- Turn off the hob and put everything else into the vinegar mixture. Let it sit for at least 4 hours, or up to a day

- Strain everything out, and your shrub will stay fresh for 2-3 months

- Pour all ingredients over ice and then top with tonic. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

Et voila! A tasty gin and tonic - a chance to impress all of your friends with your nifty cocktail making skills!

The cocktail is available from Poppies Fish & Chips in their Soho and Spitalfields London locations throughout National Fish & Chips Day, but you've got to be quickthere are only 100 being given away for free!
