Thanks to the launch of the new vegan sausage roll earlier this year, Greggs has reported a 14% increase in sales.

The popular bakery chain has also increased profit expectations for the year thanks to the 'extensive publicity' over the launch of the new savoury treat last month. (Looking at you Piers Morgan.)

In case you've been living under a rock this year then you'll know all about how much the new vegan sausage roll has disgusted the country's most easily-riled breakfast TV host.

The strong start to the year has come as the vegan sausage roll saw a huge jump in the number of people buying their pastry snacks in Greggs.

Greggs, which sells 1.5million sausage rolls a week, created a vegan option due to public demand and after an online petition was created by Peta.

The petition was signed by more 20,000 people last year.

In a statement Greggs said: 'The rate of growth has eased slightly in February, but the strength of trading is likely to have a material impact on the first-half result for 2019.

'Overall the board now anticipates that 2019 full-year underlying profit before tax (excluding exceptional charges) is likely to be ahead of its previous expectations.'

The 14.1% hike in sales is huge compared to the 2.9% increase this time last year.

Last year Greggs opened 149 new branches and now has 1,953 stores across the UK.
