In 2015 Disney announced plans to add Mulan to the long list of popular animations that would be adapted into live action movies. Filming began earlier this month in New Zealand and China and luckily we have been given a glimpse of what is to come.

Disney have released the first picture from the movie which shows Chinese actress Liu Yifei in the eponymous role of Fa Mulan, samurai sword and all. In the image, Yifei looks fierce and focused as the iconic feminist hero which was previously brought to screens in the 1998 animated feature film.

Yifei is well known in China for her work in film and television but this role could mark her breakthrough into mainstream Hollywood. The actress won a worldwide casting search that took place across five continents and beat out 1,000 other candidates to secure the role of Mulan.

The casting process for the film came under intense scrutiny due to the whitewashing that seems to be plaguing Hollywood in recent years and it is a relief to see that Disney have stayed true to the story they are telling with their casting this time.

Joining Yifei in the cast are Yoson An as Chen Honghui and Jet Li as the Emperor of China. Gong Li, of Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) has also been announced in the cast as a powerful witch although so far no other details of her character have been released.

Niki Caro is set to direct, marking only the second time Disney has hired a female director for a project with a budget of over $100 million, following in the footsteps of Patty Jenkins who helmed last years critically and commercially successful Wonder Woman

Mulan is set for release in March 2020.
