First Cars 3 trailer takes the series in a surprising new direction

Pixar just unleashed the first teaser trailer for arguably their least anticipated film ever and, well, it’s a little confusing.

The mere 49 seconds of footage seems to show-off a totally new look to the Pixar Cars universe, trading in the obsessively dorky old designs for something, well, mega dark and detailed. It is just a teaser but if this footage is anything like the tone of the finished film, the animation giants may be about to reveal something very, very unexpected.

The trailer even promises in its dying seconds that “from this moment, everything will change”. Spooky.

Set to be released some six years after the seriously lacklustre Cars 2 (still Pixar’s most critically-savaged effort to date), this third instalment’s very existence came as a bit of a shock to fans. As far as franchises go, Pixar already has its pick of incredible sequel opportunities, not to mention access to some of the industry’s greatest writers and creatives.

So why the hell are they making another Cars movie?

The cynics will no doubt be banging on and on about ‘merchandising’ until release day; after all, the latest sequel’s toy sales made it the “most lucrative film toy franchise ever” according to The Telegraph, but Pixar boss and head Disney creative guru John Lasseter still insisted that that wasn’t why they made the movie.

Even if we push the toy debate to one side for a minute, Cars is still a recognisable franchise, and considering its last sequel’s box office returns (although not great) still beat out original efforts like The Good Dinosaur, another Cars film is far from a financially stupid idea.

Who knows, with the more varied animation used in their latest short Piper, the Pixar heads could simply be using the perfectly sellable, but entirely expendable Cars franchise to try something different with their go-to visual style. If the new look visuals work, it’s another groundbreaking step forward for the studio; if it doesn’t, they’ve still got the franchise cushion to fall back on; everybody’s kinda sorta expecting another sub-par Cars movie so if they deliver one, it’s not the end of the world.

And with new blood Brian Fee, a former storyboard artist, taking over the reigns from John Lasseter, it’s very possible we might be on the edge of something a lot more interesting than what we first expected.

The official synopsis released with the trailer seems to be taking things back to basics too, so some standout visuals would certainly help it to make up the difference:

“Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!”

All will no doubt be revealed in due course, but for the time being, colour us surprisingly intrigued.

Cars 3 is set for release in the UK on 14th July 2017.
