With just three weeks to go before the General Election, Pathe has released the first teaser trailer and announced a release date for upcoming drama Suffragette. The feature film, the first to tell the story of women’s fight for the vote in Edwardian Britain, stars Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep and will be released on 30th October 2015 in the UK. The announcement comes in light of the #VotingMatters campaign, which is aiming to get as many women as possible to sign up to vote before the deadline on 20th April – this Monday. In the last UIK General Election, in 2010, more than nine million women failed to register their vote. Suffragette tells the story of the ordinary women who turned militant in their fight for enfranchisement in the early 20th Century, after the realisation that peaceful protest was not going to help them achieve their goals. Mulligan plats lowly foot soldier Maud, who is at the heart of the story. The film also stars Anne-Marie Duff, Brendan Gleeson and Ben Whishaw, and is written by Abi Morgan – the voice behind The Iron Lady, Shame, The Invisible Woman and The Hour. Suffragette is directed by Sarah Gavron, who has teamed up with Morgan before – on 2007’s Brick Lane. To find out more about the #VotingMatters campaign head over to twitter.
