The American Fashion brand famously represented by Selena Gomez (these stunning campaigns are a must-see) collaborated with the 28-year-old designer for a new capsule collection and the result was simply outstanding: pearls, a lot of colour and paint, mixed with the so-loved class of the brand.
The original “C” Coach signature logo print, which first debuted in 2001, was this year taken into the next level by Coach’s creative director, Stuart Vevers. Vevers used a slightly darker colour palette and made the logo smaller and lighter than the original one, while adding a leather trim and new hardware.
Telling a story with each bag
Matty Bovan’s unique customisation contributed for the revival of these classic bags- his plan of telling a story with each bag was accomplished by the remarkable use of paint and pearls that resulted in an explosion of colour and personality. The collaboration consists of two versions of the Signature Riley bag, and one of the Signature Duffle bag, which Matty admits to be his favourite. 'Ever since I was a teenager I have scribbled on my hands and schoolbooks, and with The Duffle style, I have hand-drawn symbols of eyes to really stand out against the Signature logo print, using bold white paint,” Bovan told Elle UK.

COACH x Matty Bovan made their presence in London Fashion Week in February this year and easily caught the attention of the public. Matty’s own platform and market are expanding, and he thanks Vevers for the opportunity to showcase his designs and illustrations. From Central Saint Martin to COACH Matty Bovan graduated from Central Saint Martins, in London, in 2015, with an MA in Fashion Knitwear. His graduate collection got him the L’Oréal Professional Creative Award, followed by the LVMH Graduate Prize 2015. He was also nominated for British Emerging Womenswear Talent at the Fashion Awards 2017 and, as if this isn’t enough proof of how far this young artist is going, his pieces have been seen worn by celebrities like Hailey Baldwin and Winnie Harlow. In 2017, Rita Ora appeared in a Matty Bovan costume to present the MTV EMAs.
The expressionist, out-of-the-box style he presents has a purpose: “I have a lot of conflicting thoughts, a lot of unrest about the political climate we live in,’ he said. “A lot of people do. The only thing I can do in response to that is to bang a drum, hard, for the idea of totally being yourself.” This 2018 collaboration with COACH isn’t his first. The artist had worked with Vevers in 2016, when he customized COACH bags for his Fashion East debut, using safety pins and jewellery made by his mother. However, the collection was merely for showcasing and wasn’t retailed anywhere. This year, the public can not only admire his unique talent in customising but also buy these exclusive, explosive and lively pieces online. His first solo show in London Fashion Week, earlier this year, proved that Matty’s talent goes beyond customising. He is playing his cards in the world of fashion by displaying an exceptional use of fabrics, proportions and colour. “Vigilamus”, the futuristic collection he presented, features unusual cuts and unseen mixes of patterns and fabrics. “As a designer, it’s my job to push taste,” Matty said. “You have to make people think.”

COACH x Matty Bovan Spring/Summer 19 collection His passion for craft and intimacy through his pieces is very much shown is this DIY-styled collection. Beyond the mixture of textures, patterns and proportions, there is a sense of rebelliousness and transparency in his multi-coloured collection- Matty can certainly make people think, and his pieces push the concept of harmony to the next level. The chaos of colour, neon, volume, webs of scrawls and cave painting doodles create a joyful balance and inspire people to free themselves and follow their instincts, just like Matty successfully did with fashion. This artist leaves us with high expectations and justifiable excitement for what will follow these extravagant and very promising shows. Meanwhile, you can shop the COACH x Matty Bovan bags here:
