Lydia's Look for Less: summer shorts

With the dreary weather and even drearier moods (thanks end of term deadlines), those long hot summer days full of beach trips, festivals and beer gardens feel painfully far away.

However, if there's one sure-fire way to perk up your up mood, it's with some summer wardrobe planning. And where better to start than with summer’s favourite staple?

That's right, because those humble summer shorts have had a major makeover on the runway this season. Prepare for your shorts to be the standout feature, not just the bottom half of your outfit.

Whilst we all love our classic denim shorts and bring them out each year, the designers haven’t always been so keen on this effortless summer basic. However, this season the runway redefined our idea of what a pair of shorts could be.

At Louis Vuitton silky, colourful shorts were the playful accompaniment to structured jewelled jackets. Topshop and Valentino opted for bold bright shorts to inject colour into summer wardrobes.

The biggest revamp of shorts this season though, was the length - instead of minimum coverage, the trend is now to have shorts extended to just above your knee - thanks to Off White and Nina Ricci.

And of course when Kim Kardashian does something the rest of the fashion world follows and so a plethora of tight fitting bike shorts were featured by many designers including Saint Laurent.

Big and flared

One of the trends this year featured slightly bigger shorts than normal but still keeping the length fun and flirty. Monse’s collection featured a black and white geometric pair of shorts and Pull & Bear have created a pair very similar for £15.99.

Thanks to the monochrome print, these are a great pair of shorts to bring out even when the sun isn’t shining. Start wearing them now with knitwear or shirt and heeled boots for a day time look, and for an alternative night out outfit, with a blazer, t-shirt and heels.

Long and loose

The looser fitting the better, was the approach when it came to shorts this year, and Nina Ricci championed a long boy short that was still chic and uber feminine.

Mango have created a really luxurious tailored pair of shorts for £35.99 that look very similar to the Nina Ricci design:

Dress them up with heels and gold hoops, or out and about on day trips or city exploring. These shorts will look great  accessorised with summer’s favourtie raffia bag and platform sandals.

Keep it colourful

Designers were obsessed with bright shorts this season, especially dark pinks and reds, but the good news is, you don't have to go designer to get a set! Topshop have a pair of pretty pink shorts for £24.00, perfect for pairing with a cashmere jumper for a laidback evening vibe. And just check out this similarity:

For a festival look wear these shorts with a faux feather fluffy grey jacket and biker boots. These shorts are perfect for an alternative occasionwear look - worn with a white broderie anglaise shirt, jacket and heels - it’s made for a garden party outfit.
