So far, one thing has stood out about Meghan Markle’s outfit choices for official engagements, and that’s her penchant for black trousers.

It’s a look we’re all loving. Online searches for black trousers have risen by 40% since the beginning of the year, according to global fashion search site Lyst. Meghan is truly proving that basics don’t have to be boring.

Here’s our take on the latest ‘Meghan effect’ and how you can steal her style!

Wide-legged trousers

Meghan wore these Burberry trousers on a visit to Brixton in January as part of an outfit which celebrated so many British fashion icons: the jumper was from M&S and immediately sold out!

Wide-legged trousers are a great look for all shapes and sizes as they help to balance out larger hips or shoulders and can really help to lengthen your legs if you wear some heels with them – not that Meghan needs any help in that department!

These ASOS trousers (£25) are an absolute bargain and capture Meghan’s relaxed vibe really well. With volume like these, you’ll want to keep the top half sleek: try this white t-shirt with a pretty lace twist from Dorothy Perkins (£20).

Where Kate might have chosen a sweeping gown for a red carpet event, Meghan chose this Alexander McQueen trouser suit and who can blame her?

The sharp tailoring on this screams elegant glamour, whilst the hem hits at precisely the right point on her leg. Even the rain couldn’t make this outfit a damp squib!

To get the look, we love these from Warehouse (£36). The simplicity of slim trousers allows for some playfulness above the waistline: why not tap into the floral trend with this shirt from Oasis (£39)?

A staple of so many wardrobes, Meghan wore these on a visit to Cardiff in mid-January. Her choice of designer, Hiut Denim, was spot on: they’re based in Wales. Her monochrome look kept it classy, proving that jeans and a nice top are always a winner, even for royalty.

Topshop Baxter jeans
In case you need a pair yourself, these Baxter jeans from Topshop are a classic (£40), featuring straight legs which are often more flattering than full-on skinnies. Let’s keep this one sleek and sophisticated with this black top from Warehouse (£24), which also taps into the statement sleeve trend.

With a neutral palette like this, you can really experiment with jewellery and accessories – even if you haven’t quite got Meghan’s sparkler on your ring finger!

Most recently, Meghan wore these Veronica Beard trousers on her first visit to Scotland on the day before Valentine’s Day – and we wish these had been our Valentine!

High-waisted bottoms were all over the catwalk for SS18 so we shouldn’t be surprised that Meghan is leading the way for fashion. They work brilliantly for all kinds of figures, emphasising tiny waists and helping to lengthen legs. We love them!

Red Herring high waisted trousers
These trousers from Red Herring at Debenhams (£29) will help get the look for less. You could try Meghan’s all-black outfit, but a fun twist for those of us who aren’t royalty could be to pair these with a tucked-in slogan-tee. New Look has dozens, including this hugely apt design (£8.99).
