Blazers: office attire or wardrobe essential?

Share This Article:

Traditionally the backbone of a formal suit, a blazer is the total wardrobe necessity for smartwear - perfect for job interviews, meetings and anything required looking remotely official.

But, nowaday, the blazer is more than that… it’s the one wardrobe staple for any true fashionista.

Wearing a blazer can sometimes feel a little formal, but pieced together with the right things and it can be such a versatile and perfect addition to your wardrobe.

The best thing about blazers is their ability to dress outfits up or down, here are our favourite ways to work the look:

An extra layer of class

Making a blazer your coat of choice for a simple outfit is an effective way to add character and smarten the look up whilst still looking uber-chic.

Teaming up with a pair of good ol’ denims and a casual tee gives a plain look a sleek edge, taking it from an errand-running outfit to some day-about-town vibes.

Blogger Megan Ellaby pulls off this look with a contrasting brightly coloured stripe top and smart grey blazer - so fab.

All in contrast

Using a blazer to dress up a casual look is super effective tying in with the ever-popular athleisure trend (comfy cottons and a hooded jumper looking smart is always a favourite), and it’s an edgy way to modernise it.

Going for a neutral colour checked blazer with a sporty outfit clashes really well. Flatforms or funky trainers are the perfect footwear for this look.

Smarten it up

For something a little smarter, team your blazer with vinyl trousers or wet look leggings, a pair of ankle boots and a chic baggy shirt to capture the slightly masculine persona of the shirt, whilst making it so feminine and stylish.

This is the perfect alternative to ‘jeans and a nice top’ and would be perfect for a dinner date or casual drinks.

Dress it up

Then, there is of course, the blazer dress. This is a look that works for both nights outs and events, and can be found on pretty much any clothing website.

But for an authentic and different alternative to this look, go for an oversized or men’s blazer.  Pinch in your waist with a belt, roll sleeves up and wear with knee highs for the perfect going out look.
