Yes okay, so Valentine's Day is a commercial holiday invented to make people part with yet more cash... but even if you're not a sucker for the concept, I'm certainly a sucker for dressing up.

Let's face it, February is a hideous month which is well in need of a little romance - and a good excuse to buy some new clothes.

And so, whatever your plans this 14th February, from dinner to lunch, a day out to a night in, we've got you covered with our edit of the best outfits out there on the high street.

Dinner

Red half sleeved rouched bodycon dress, Dorothy Perkins £28

Dorothy Perkins red dress

This is just a classic red dress, and nothing says Valentine's like red. Whilst it is bodycon, it is rouched over the stomach area, so you can eat as much of that pasta and bread as you like at dinner.

This would look equally as good with black tights or (if you're feeling very brave) bare legs. Go all out and match this up with some classic heels!

Stripe wrap long sleeve top, Oasis £29

If you're more a jeans and a nice top kind of girl, make your top a bit different. This is a classic Bardot-style which is flattering and classy at the same time.

This would look amazing with some simple black skinny jeans.

Pale Pink Embroidered Mesh Midi Dress, New Look £44.99

This outfit just screams romance - it's so pretty! If your idea of a night out is candles and violins, this might be a good one for you. To stop it becoming too Disney-princess, try toughening it up. A faux leather jacket is a great way to make this a practical yet pretty outfit.

 Day out

Heart ruffle sweat, Oasis £30

Oasis heart sweater

A perhaps more subtle take on Valentine's chic, this would be great if you're going to be sightseeing or spending the day indulging in some retail therapy. Match it up with some simple jeans and some comfy yet stylish ankle boots.

Black Ribbon Trim Love Slogan T-Shirt, New Look £12.99

New Look slogan tee

A day out means comfort as well as style. This slogan t-shirt gives a massive nod towards the occasion - and if you can't be in Paris for Valentine's Day, the least your SO can do is attempt some seductive French!

This would go with jeans and a boyfriend cardigan (because come on, it's February!), but for a fun twist, why not try a leather-look skirt like this? That way, if you do end up turning a day out into a night out, you're all set!

A pleated skirt is a real MVP of your wardrobe, because it can be dressed up or dressed down according to the occasion. For a day date, try a roll-neck or slogan-tee, and to keep it fresh and unfussy, some simple and casual trainers.

Lunch date

Black 'Jules' floral print mini skirt, Dorothy Perkins £24

I'm such a huge fan of this skirt! It's so versatile - you could match it up with a simple black roll-neck or a white t-shirt, and it would look equally as good with both.

Colour-wise, it's also going to work for now, and would make a great transitional piece next autumn/winter too - a real investment piece!

For a Valentine's lunch date, choose some classic knee-high boots like these to make it casual but special.

Spot print skirt, Warehouse £49

If hearts are a bit too obvious for you, why not stick to the designated colour scheme but go for this much more fun and different spot print?

The pleat makes this really romantic and with the right styling, this could see you through the rest of winter and into spring. For your lunch-date, pair it with a simple black knitted top to keep all eyes on the spots!

Textured vertical stripe knit, Oasis £25 Illustrator Bird Printed Knit, Oasis £38 Oasis bird print jumper

You might not think birds are especially Valentine's, but can I remind you that both they and bees, according to the song, fall in love. And this is too delightful a jumper not to snap it up - Oasis' limited edition ranges have been fantastic for several seasons now, and this is no exception.

For a really casual cosy lunch-date (we're thinking country pub, open fire, possibly a dog or two), this will look incredible with classic jeans like these.

Night in

Embroidered hummingbird camisole set, Boux Avenue £38

Boux Avenue pjs

Staying in doesn't mean you have to forego your sense of style. This pretty camisole set will help to make your Valentine's night feel really special. Given that it is February, you might want to invest in a wrap as well though - a crisp white dressing gown is a winner every time.

If your day in is more a day in, eating junk food and bingeing Netflix, these cute pjs are the ones for you. Featuring arguably the most romantic scene in film history, these are comfy, fun and will almost certainly not cause you any kind of allergic reaction.

If you're more Thumper than Lady, check out the ones below instead - or just check out Tesco in general, they repeatedly nail nightwear season after season!

Printed vest, Oasis £18

Oasis vest

For laid-back with a chic edge, try this floral vest. This can take you from bed, to sofa, and back again - or, if you have to, out to the shops to stock up on snacks if you run out (because that would be a Valentine's crisis.

Frankly, with the right styling, this could take you even further - but if you've already poured the wine and drawn the curtains, you could match it up with these casual leggings to stay cosy, comfy and content all evening.
