How to clash your colours the fashionable way

Share This Article:

Think that clashing colours is an absolute no go in fashion? Think again, this season mixing up colour palettes is big news.

'Never wear black with navy', 'pink on red is never a good look'. 2017 fashion is all about breaking the rules, and if the SS17 catwalks are anything to go by, we will most definitely be breaking some fashion rules with our colour combinations this spring.

Clashing colours is set to be spring's most controversial new way to make a statement, with the explosive meeting of turqoise and yellow, or the oh-so-fahsionable layering of pink on orange.

But, let's face it. This is fashion we're talking about, and there's definitely still some skill to be mastered before we go picking our clothes out blind. So I've put together some basic pointers to help you master this up-and-coming trend, ensuring that you look like a high-fashion knock-out, instead of just one hot mess!

Rule #1: keep it simple

You can mix a pattern in with your colour clashing, but no more than one as the look will be too busy. If you do want to include patterns, go for something standard like a stripe.

Pair this tee with blue denim to get yourself started with the trend!

Rule #2: be bold

Go for the bright shades of colours rather than pastels. Colour clashing works best with strong and bold colours as it really makes outfits pop. Plus, bright colours can really boost your mood, perfect for those dreary Monday mornings!

Pair this mesh pink top with a red bag to get the look.

Rule #3: experiment with your wardrobe

This trend is an opportunity to see your tired summer-wardrobe in a whole new light. How many times have you picked that top out and thought, 'I just don't have anything to go with it?' not anymore. Lay out your clothes on the floor, and get a little daring by mixing up your usual pairings. Some popular colour-clash combinations are red and pink, blue and orange and yellow and purple! You never know how flattering they could be!

Rule #4: don't forget to accessorize

If you’re not brave enough to get involved with the trend all over, why not invest in a few colour clashing accessories instead? They’re a great way to add a bit of flare to your most staple looks.

This bag would be perfect for elevating even the most monotone of outfits.

Rule #5: keep it simple

Colour blocking is definitely the most effective way to pull of this trend. Keeping your outfit minimal will allow you to really work those colour clashes to the max. Or otherwise, why not invest in a few statement colour clash items to exploit the trend at a more subtle, yet still highly effect level?

Take these shoes for example. How perfect would these be with with a pair of straight leg jeans? Not to mention, you'd be nailing two trends in one!

So, there you have it. The basics for creating an eye-popping outfit. Wear it well and you’ll be giving absolute style envy all summer long!
