My Personal Shopping Experience at Topshop, Oxford Street

I have just had my first Topshop personal shopping experience, and I write this article with a spring in my step and a whole new A/W wardrobe!

I am a massive Topshop fan but I usually find the Oxford Circus store so overwhelming due to the size and sheer amount of clothes within.

I’d heard about the Personal Shopping option but disregarded it before as I thought it would take lots of time and cost money! Also, I am a bit of a lone shopper. I like to browse the rails on my own looking for something to pop out and I hate pushy sale assistants who get in my face and try to convince me that the dress I’m trying on is ‘AMAZING’, even though it fits terribly and makes me look ridiculous, so I was worried that the Personal Shopper would be an extension of this.

So before the big day you have to send your shopper a briefing on what you like, answering a few questions about what you’re looking for, your style, likes/dislikes, size, skin, hair and eye colour. So I explained that I was hoping for a bit of a capsule wardrobe for autumn.

When I got to the store I was shown to a large dressing room with a rail packed full of clothes, accessories and shoes. My Personal Shopper then discussed what they had chosen for me, then it was my turn to pick out what I definitely would NOT wear and then they left and let me try on their selections.

From the things that I picked out to try she was able to gauge my style a bit better and popped in again with some more selections, and see if I was ok/to offer some styling suggestions. I was free to try on as many things as I wanted and ask for help as much as I wanted – she was more than happy to help.

When I had decided what I wanted to buy, I was taken to the Personal Shopping till and I never felt any pressure to buy more than I wanted (which was something I had been concerned about). While most of the things were my own style, a few of the items were things I never would have thought about trying on, never mind wearing – so this experience has opened my eyes to what I can wear, and great to get some variation in my wardrobe and see myself in styles I had thought wouldn’t suit me.

It was like playing dress-up in Topshop... but with cupcakes, no queue, no stress…

I was very pleasantly surprised at how easy and relaxed it was, and how helpful and positive the personal shopper was. They gave me great advice on what would suit me and how to add accessories and just being genuinely helpful without being condescending or pressuring.

I would highly recommend the service. Don’t be put off by thinking you need lots of money for it – they stick to your budget, there’s no pressure to buy and it’s a great way of getting a capsule wardrobe of mix and match outfits for the season ahead! Best of all, it's free.

Topshop Personal Shopping is also available in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds (Trinity), Liverpool, London Knightsbridge, Manchester Arndale and Manchester Trafford Centre.
