Unless you’re one of those very lucky people who is currently on a third year abroad in the sun, you will no doubt associate January with those grey “back to uni” days, and with the weather getting increasingly unpredictable and cold. We’re not exactly excited about getting back to the books.

Unfortunately, aside from the mince pies and food overload, winter also means freezing cold libraries and high heating bills. But fear not. Here’s a guide on how to keep warm during the chilly days but also look bang on trend.

Tip no. 1: Layer up. Wearing more than one top or a couple of pair of socks not only keeps you warm but adds texture and style to your outfit. Try a funky bralet under a sheer shirt with a thick knitted jumper on top. Make sure the shirt sticks out the bottom of your jumper or at the sleeves. Add a pair of drainpipe jeans, some trusty boots and voila! Also make sure your woolly socks are sticking out the top of your boots for an even more cosy look.

Tip no. 2: Invest in a woolly hat. Forget the hat hair, woolly hats have boomed in popularity and become the number one student accessory. Go for a hat with a pom-pom in any colour your like, but if you want to follow the season’s trends, the brighter the better.

Tip no. 3: Swap trackies for woolly tights or leggings. Leggings are now available in any colour and pattern under the sun, meaning we are more than spoilt for choice, and they are irresistibly comfy. Go for knitted tights for an elegant look under a skirt or shorts, or buy a pair of boldly patterned leggings for a more quirky look.

Tip no. 4: Borrow your boyfriend’s clothes. The only thing better than your boyfriend himself is his wardrobe. Getting hold of your boyfriend’s jumpers, coats or shirts adds a masculine edge to your look as well as nailing the oversized trend. Try a white boyfriend shirt under one of your jumpers, or a boyfriend jumper with a pair of your favourite skinnies.

Tip no. 5: Swap brogues for knee-high riding boots. There’s nothing worse than cold, wet feet, especially when everyone in the library can smell them. Spend your money on a pair of knee-high biker boots, a style which all the celebrities seem to be lusting after. The best bit is, these boots look better with a low heel, meaning the walk to uni won’t be so painful. The high street is full of riding boots in every colour and style so there’s no excuse to not bag a pair of these!

Here’s some of the must-have pieces for your grueling days in the library:

  • ASOS premium fine knit jumper, £40.
  • Glamorous denim patch shirt, £35.
  • Boohoo tie-dye print leggings, £10.
  • Topshop sweater dress, £38.
  • Asda George leather riding boots, £38.
