The two day event, held from 7pm on 26th and 27th February in Southampton Unviersity’s Annex Theatre, will also play host to two of the most prolific and exciting acts on the comedy circuit. Sketch show Saturday sees Totally Tom headline, an act who is an overnight YouTube sensation with their sardonic tales of University life, and on Stand-up Sunday, ComedySoc play host to Colin Owens, winner of 2006 Jimmy Carr Comedy Idol competition, and finalist at the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year Show. Totally Tom, a duo with the self proclaimed friendship rivalling that of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley, are sharp, and timely with an edge that few contemporary sketch acts can achieve. They take all that is ridiculous about life as a student and blow it into epic proportions, their most popular skit being ‘High Renaissance Man’, a mockumentary following the life of a Bristol University student that is quite literally side splitting: think along the same lines as ‘Gap Yah’ and you’d be almost halfway there.
Colin Owens, on the other hand, gives paranoia a sense of confidence, covering all the subjects that could possibly upset or annoy a white, middle class, attractive young male… Plagued with the curse of being normal, Owens is widely regarded as charming, laconic and frighteningly funny, with the likes of Russell Brand and Michael McIntyre singing his praises.
ComedySoc’s two day festival will also include a the finest acts from universities including Oxford, Aberystwyth, Aberdeen, Portsmouth, Manchester, Sheffield and Southampton Solent, the latter being one of the only universities in the country to provide a course specialising in comedy writing, so expect a weekend packed with laughs-a-plenty.
