From Shakespeare to rep theatre and some famous faces, here’s a quick guide to some of the best productions coming up at the NT this season.

December isn’t just for pantomimes in the theatre. The National Theatre is showing several brilliant new productions. Director Ivo van Hove makes his NT debut with Ibsen’s classic Hedda Gabler on 12th December in the Lyttelton Theatre. The modernised version stars Ruth Wilson as Hedda. It will be running until the 21st March so there’s plenty of time to grab yourself a ticket.

Another highlight in December will be the long awaited, family favourite Peter Pan. After a sell-out run at Bristol Old Vic, Sally Cookson brings her inventive new production to the Olivier Theatre from 2nd December.

Following a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year, Carly Wijs brings her new play US/THEM to the Dorfman Theatre. Based on a real even in Beslan where a group of terrorists hold hundreds of children hostage, it focuses on how children cope with traumatic situations. It will begin it’s run on 16th January.

Shortly after, on 24th January, Ennet Kirwan brings Dublin Oldschool to the Dorfman Theatre. Described as a ‘razor sharp spoken word odyssey’, the play follows a wannabe DJ called Jason on an enhanced trip through Dublin – on his way he is reunited with his brother.

Starring Tamsin Greig as Malvolia, Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night starts previewing on 15th February. The new production is directed by Simon Godwin and will be shown in the Olivier Theatre

Making its European premier, Ugly Lies the Bone by Lindsey Ferrentino will start its previews at the Lyttelton Theatre on 22nd February. IT follows the story of Jess, a soldier who has just served three years in Afghanistan. It looks at how she adapts to life having spent months in a severe burns unit.
