Durham students taking Great British Bake Off themed musical to Edinburgh Fringe

Today in news you didn’t expect to read outside of a weird, psychedelic dream: a bunch of Durham University students are preparing to take a Great British Bake Off themed musical to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Set in the fictional Derbyshire village of Bakewell (well, where else?) Durham University Light Opera Group’s version of The Bakewell Bake Off will open at Edinburgh Fringe on Wednesday 5th August.

Coincidentally (or probably not) it’s the same night that GBBO series six hits BBC One.

The musical will follow the events of Bakewell’s annual baking competition, which is being overseen by the watchful eye of the head of The Bakewell Baking Committee, Victoria Sponge.

The audience can expect eclectic characters and numerous baking disasters – much like good old GBBO itself, but without the sexual innuendo of Mel and Sue and the addition of Paul Hollywood.

Durham Light Opera Group’s Edinburgh Fringe offering isn’t the first time the GBBO-inspired show has hit the stage, though.

Beginning as a project written by Masters of Musical Theatre students at the Guildford School of Acting, it has already enjoyed a sell-out run at Waterloo East Theatre in London in 2013, and another successful run at the Landor Theatre in the same year.

This time it will run until 22nd August, with tickets starting at £6.50. Let the baking commence...
