Eight years - it has been eight years since Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man was on the theatre circuit, and now the award winning show is sensationally revived this week, starting at Bromley’s Churchill Theatre. For anyone who is unsure, Matthew Bourne is not only the talented creator of Swan Lake, the world’s lengthiest running ballet production, he is also five-time Olivier Award winner and solely the only British director to have won multiple Tony Awards for both Best Choreographer and Best Director of a Musical. You could call him an artistic genius. Marvelling, daring and a rigid visualisation of small-town America, The Car Man is limply centred upon Bizet’s opera, and incorporates strong themes of desire, deception, greediness and vengeance. The narrative follows the retaliation of inhabitants when a stranger arrives, dashing their hopes and dreams. Renowned performers from Bourne’s dance and theatre company New Adventures play the thrilling show's lead characters. It is a masterpiece from Bourne and is must see show for this spring.
