More than 450,000 students have started university in the last few weeks - and figures show that one in five of them will be a victim of theft at some point during their years in higher education.

Student homes are seen as rich pickings by criminals who are able to steal multiple gadgets, including laptops and mobile phones, from just one residence.

LoJack for Laptops, the tracking and recovery service, are working with the Police Association of Higher Education Liaison Officers (PAHELO) throughout the UK on an initiative to tackle student theft.

PAHELO’s advice for students includes:

-          Out of term time make sure you take your valuables with you

-          Use a tracking software such as LoJack for Laptops

-          It may be obvious, but always lock your door and secure your windows

-          Beware of tailgating, strangers following you into halls

-          If you have a bike, always use a D lock

LoJack for Laptops has been working with PAHELO at 45 universities throughout freshers’ period and into term to ensure that students have access to software that enables their lost or stolen laptop to be recovered. Licenses were distributed to students at freshers’ fairs.

The top five universities with the highest crime figures, according to data from www.police.uk are:

  1. Hull
  2. Manchester Metropolitan
  3. Manchester
  4. Birmingham City
  5. Aston
Nick Boyce, Chair of PAHELO, says: “Forces across the country are recognising that technology that allows officers to track stolen items is becoming increasingly important. Working with LoJack for Laptops allows us to provide an invaluable service for students and work alongside local police authorities to recover their lost and stolen laptops.”

LoJack for Laptops is the only tracking and recovery tool that works in association with law enforcement to get a stolen or lost laptop back. In addition to recovery services, the software also provides remote lock and delete features to ensure sensitive information is protected.

Derek Skinner, Regional Director of Recovery and Investigative Services for LoJack for Laptops comments: “Students are taking more and more gadgets away with them to university and are relying on them to hold important information and data. It’s no longer a matter of replacing stolen gadgets, but more about recovering them and the data that they hold. Working with PAHELO allows us to speak directly to students, who are at a high risk of crime, and ensure they’re in the best position possible to get their lost or stolen gadgets back.”

LoJack for Laptops has recovered more than 30,000 laptops in 103 countries to date, and offers three key functions when a laptop goes missing; lock, delete, and recover. Subscriptions cost £39.95 for one year, or £79.95 for three years.
