As students across the country settle into freshers’ week, many will be challenged with kitting out their home alone for the first time.

TK Maxx’s Chief Interior Stylist, Suzie Attaway, explains here how you needn’t splurge your first loan instalment on stylishly kitting out your bedroom and kitchen.

Here are her top tips to decorate new student digs:

A trunk for your treasures

Pack a trunk full of personal items from home - photos of family and friends, a couple of mugs, jewellery in jars and other small items that will add personality to your room.

Invest in good bedding

Your bed will double as your sofa, so invest in good quality bedding. Stick to colours that are in a neutral or plain block colour and accessorise with patterned, colourful cushions and throws to brighten it up.

Posterize your walls

Framed poster or prints can instantly personalise a bland space and covers up nasty marks on your walls. For a more personal touch, you can also create a collage of photos, postcards, and other paraphernalia on a pin board.

Throw down a rug

Rugs are the perfect cure for unsightly carpet stains or bare floorboards. A shaggy or faux fur rug will also add instant warmth and provide the room with a more homely feel.

Light up the room

Make your room feel cosy with good lighting by investing in a space-saving floor lamp or a bedside lamp. A desk light is also a must for late-night essay writing. A few scented candles if you are allowed them can help to create an oasis of calm after a hectic day of lectures, and give your room a nice aroma too.

Organise your work

Nothing is more useful than a memo board, as well as pretty filing systems and storage boxes that keep your desk and ultimately your room looking tidy.

Maximise your space

There will probably be tons of space under your bed, so get some boxes and hide away winter clothing, or books, blankets that you won't need just yet. Over the door hooks / shoe racks are also a great idea.

TK Maxx is also running a competition to give a bedroom makeover to one messy/lucky student.

All you need to do is tweet a picture of your messy room with the Hashtag #MaxxMyRoom to @TKMaxx_UK. There is also a runner-up prize of a £20 TK Maxx Gift Card that will go to 10 other especially messy entries. Take a look at the entries so far here.

The competition closes on October 4th, terms and conditions can be found on TK Maxx’s Facebook page.
