Armed with a Euroline's 30-day pass this summer I had the freedom of Europe and went on a multi-city adventure.

Stopping off in Spain's capital means flamenco, boating lakes and very superior tapas. Here are five highlights...

U Hostels customer events. There is a mixture of both daytime and evening events for travellers staying at the hostel, including walking and bike tours, pub crawls, tapas evenings and flamenco evenings. All of these events are at a low cost and I found them a great way to meet other backpackers. I would highly recommend the flamenco night – it was very different way to spend an evening, and broke the cycle of spending evening after evening in the city's squares and bars.

La Masas restaurant has delicious tapas. Located just north of the city, it is well worth the walk to La Masas restaurant to taste the tapas. Not only is the food mouth-watering, but the atmosphere is great as the restaurant starts to fill up and the smell of meat starts to surround you. I would highly recommend the pork dish – paired with the potatoes it was delicious!

You can go to Parque del Retiro to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. In such a big city as Madrid it may be hard to comprehend that there is a place as relaxed and quiet as Parque del Retiro, but believe me it does exist. With its beautiful flower gardens, expanses of grass and boating lake, the park is the perfect place to visit to escape from city life for a few hours. You don’t even have to walk far, as the park is just on the edge of the city, meaning you can throw yourself back into the city whenever you want to.

The free walking tours are great. I went on free walking tours in other cities during my trip around Europe but none of them were as interesting and fun as this one. Our guide was fantastic at engaging us, and considering how many people were in the group, he left no one bored. The tour allowed me to see the main highlights of the city and to find out way more than I would have done if I had walked around alone with a guidebook. And best of all, it was free!

The nightlife. You only have to walk down a single street in the evening in Madrid to realise that this city’s nightlife holds something special. With all the bars and clubs located in one area, it couldn’t be easier to get from place to place and try and suss out where is going to be the best place to begin your night out. Look out for bar workers on the street who often hand out free drinks tokens and special deals (two cocktails for six euros)!
