Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead) will take up the role of the lieutenant, making this series the first one from the Star Trek franchise to focus on a character who isn't the ship's highest-ranking officer.

Michelle Yeoh will also play as Captain Georgiou, the captain of another important starship, the Shenzhou, and an important character in the story.

This announcement answers the recurring question who the one to play the captain of the Discovery starship would be.

Other confirmed cast includes Mary Wiseman (Longmire) as Tilly, a Starfleet cadet in her final year, who gets assigned to the starship Discovery. James Frain (Gotham) will be Spock’s father, Sarek, Doug Jones (Hellboy) will play Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer and a new alien species in the Star Trek universe. Anthony Rapp (Rent) was cast as Lt. Stamets, an “astromycologist,” fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery.

Star Trek: Discovery  doesn't have a release date yet. While originally a February date, and then a May one was announced, it's still in production.
