The University of Essex has suspended a lecturer accused of posting anti-semitic messages on Facebook.

Concerns have been raised against computer science lecturer Dr Maaruf Ali who is alleged to have written "the Zionists next want to create a society here at our university".

He is also accused of making other Facebook posts where he seemed to deny the Holocaust, which have apparently now been deleted.

These social media posts are being investigated with the vice-chancellor saying anti-Semitism "has no place at our university".

Dr Ali’s suspension comes in the same week Essex Uni students sparked national outrage when 200 of them voted against creating a Jewish society.

However the Jewish Society was officially founded on Friday 22 February despite the opposition.

Vice-chancellor Professor Anthony Forster said: “To see the University of Essex associated with antisemitism has been a deeply shocking event and one which has filled me with great sadness. Antisemitism is antithetical to the values of the University of Essex and has no place at our university. We have a zero tolerance approach to harassment and hate crime, which is at the very core of our values and beliefs.”

He added: “Recent events have shown me we still have work to do, and I am announcing a series of immediate actions to tackle all forms of antisemitism within our community.”
