A talented schoolboy who lives in an east London council estate has won a £76,000 scholarship to Eton College.

Hasan Patel, 16, is studying for his GCSE’s at George Mitchell School but come September he will swap his city state school for Eton, one of the most prestigious independent boys schools in the world.

The teenager, who currently shares a two-bedroom council flat with his parents and two brothers in Leyton, is planning to study A-levels in history, geography, politics and drama.

His curent headteacher, Mr Hussain, told The National Student: “At George Mitchell School, our scholarship programme has seen a number of students gain places at independent institutions, and I’m incredibly proud that Hasan Patel adds to this growing number of students

"Hasan is an incredible inspiration to his peers and an exceptional young man, with huge potential.

"Hasan’s scholarship serves as a reminder to all of us that it does not matter where you come from or who you are, if you are determined then you will succeed.

"Hasan is one of the most motivated and dedicated students I have known in all my years of teaching, and I wish him every success for the future”

A self-styled ‘Corbynista’, Hasan is passionate about politics and fighting social inequalities and last year became the youngest speaker at a major party conference when he gave a speech at the Labour conference aged 15.

Nestled in leafy Berkshire, Eton provides a full boarding education and has educated both Princes William and Harry along with 19 British prime ministers.
