Lancaster's Snowsports Society Executive committee will have to take training to recognise hate speech. On Friday, a panel appointed by the students' union agreed on formal sanctions against the Sportssociety including training, a probation period and a public statement of apology. Last month, Lancaster students were spotted wearing t-shirts with slogans such as 'Jimmy Saville was misunderstood' and 'Sandyhook woz bantz.' They students were on a white t-shirt social organised by the Snow Sports Society when pictures of them were taken and uploaded by Sugarhouse, the nightclub run by the students' union. The panel agreed that 'the behaviours of students on the social was absolutely unacceptable and against the values of the students' union.' The sanctions include a public statement of apology which the union state that the club executives 'themselves were eager to do.' The Snowsports Society will also be placed on probation for a period of two years. Any rules broken in this time will result in an automatic one-year suspension. The executive committee will take bystander intervention and hate speech awareness training. They will also undertake equality, diversity and inclusion training, all three will be taken for a period of two years. The SU were eager to point out that they 'launched this investigation on its own initiative' and that 'no complaints were received in relation to the social at the time.' More to follow.
