A 95-year-old man has finally graduated from the University of Oxford after completing his degree over seven decades ago.

John Philip Trower read modern history at New College, he joined the institution in January 1941 but didn’t attend his graduation until last Saturday (28th July, 2018).

During World War Two  university courses were shortened  by one year, meaning John’s time in Oxford only lasted two years and he left in 1942. He went on to join the army but unlike his peers he didn't go to his graduation.

John’s nephews decided to organise his attendance at a graduation on his behalf.

A spokesperson for the college said:  "At the fantastic age of 95, Philip has to be one of our oldest alumni to come back and graduate."
