Tara Annison, who graduated from the University of York this summer, is hoping to make a lasting impression on the student rental sector with her new website RateMyUniHouse.co.uk. 

Along with two other York graduates she met at the university, Annison set up the website as a platform for students across the UK to review their rental properties. 

“[ratemyunihouse.co.uk] is a platform for students to be able to tell other what their experience was like, whether they had the best time in the world, or a rather negative experience,” she said. 

“There are a number of horror stories of students living in unliveable accommodation.” 

The website, which has reached the final stage of the Santander Universities 60 Second Pitch Awards, echoes nationwide calls to place more regulatory controls on the rental sector. 

“Hopefully this will improve the student property market that is unregulated at the moment. They [landlords] have the freedom to charge students whatever they want.” 

Yet Annison acknowledges that the majority of landlords are praiseworthy and that this website will indeed praise those property owners that do, but hold those that don’t to account. 

Creating an account and leaving a review requires a university email address and this insurance that every review has been left by a fellow student is what makes the website stand out from competitors, Annison adds. 

“You need only enter your location and this tells you if there are any rated properties in your area. If there’s not you can quickly add your own property and leave a couple of details.” 

Annison and her team will be in Dublin for the 2015 Web Summit, Europe’s largest technology start-up conference exhibiting to 40,000 people, in November.
