UEFA could introduce a third European competiton as early as 2021 according to a member of their executive committee.

The Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid will host the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final.

No specific details of the format have been revealed but the competiton would run alongside the Champions League and Europa League and would increase the number of clubs involved in European football to 96 up from 80.

It is also thought the introduction of the competition will allow for the Europa League to be streamlined to only a 32 team group stage, 16 less than currently, making it identical to the Champions League.

Whilst there is still no official confirmation from UEFA themselves, the sugguestions from senior officals within the organisation would suggest an offical announcement is near.

UEFA have mainated within the last year that they have been discussing a revamp of some sort within their competitions to freshen things up and allow for more teams to particapate in some sort of capacity.

Whilst they have left everyone in the dark as to what the new competition's format will be, it has been suggested the competiton will be almost a mini Champions League with the teams made up from a string of the weaker divisions across Europe.

The change would allow for teams who usually find themselves knocked out in the early rounds of qualyfing a chance to experience the European group stages, albeit at a lower level. It is remained to be seen what incentives winning the tournament would have in terms of prize money as well as qualfying for the following seasons Europa League or Champions League.

If UEFA are able to format the competiton in the best way possible then this could be a welcome change. It would give a lot of exposure to sides who usually see there European dreams over before the season proper kicks off and would also allow for a more competitive Europa League.

More details from UEFA are expected within the coming weeks.
