25-year-old Toni Duggan is a former Manchester City and England women’s forward. She’s the first English player to sign for Barcelona since Gary Lineker.
Duggan transferred from Everton to City in 2013 and claimed honours including this year’s women’s FA Cup. She is believed to have transferred to the Nou Camp without a fee as her contact at City came to an end.
Despite moving on Duggan had only praise for her time at City, when speaking to the BBC she said:
"I've had a lot of success in England and I've really enjoyed my time with Manchester City but I wanted to challenge myself even further by playing abroad. I'm also looking forward to learning Spanish and living in the city."
Both Duggan and the Barcelona ladies are keen to move on to bigger things though…
"My new coach Fran Sanchez has told me that their ambition is to win the Women's Champions League and the club have made that very clear with their signings over the years.”
Sanchez stepped into his job as head coach this summer and already has big plans. He spent fifteen years coaching Barca youth teams between 1997 and 2012 as well as a spell as assistant of Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Duggan’s signing follows closely behind that of Elise Bussaglia, a French international midfielder, and the signing of young Macedonian talent Natasa Andonova, from PSG.
Andonova is a versatile attacking player who was named player of the tournament at the European U19 Championships in 2010.
Meanwhile, Bussaglia commented noted that Barcelona have “been trying to develop the women’s team for some years and I’m very pleased to be part of the adventure”.
