George Groves defeated Germany’s Eduard Gutknecht on Friday night and while the match was not an official world title eliminator it likely sets Groves on the path to a renewed world title effort at Super Middleweight.

Groves took the victory via a decision and the steely, durable Gutknecht was rushed to hospital. The German had little to offer in the way of a threat to Groves but showed amazing staying power and fought the latter stages of the fight with one eye closed by swelling.

While victory over Gutknecht is no massive statement it seems to have put Groves back on the map. The London based fighter is now hoping to take on Russia’s Fedor Chudinov in the New Year and a victory in that fight could potentially see Groves take on the winner of James DeGale vs Badou Jack, (the two fight in New York on January 14th) with a world title on the line.

Having come so close to the world title before, suffering two crushing defeats at the hands of Carl Froch, ‘Saint’ George Groves seems highly motivated to mount a new challenge.

This begs the question- could Groves beat Badou Jack or DeGale?

A recent defeat to Badou Jack will leave Groves’ critics doubting his potential to take the belt were that bout to take place. However The Saint has definitely improved in fitness and indeed resolve over the course of his recent bouts.

On the other side of the coin Groves has beaten DeGale in the past. This victory came very early in their professional careers though and DeGale has had a long time to improve.

His conclusive loss to Froch and the recent points loss to Badou Jack left Groves stranded in a bit of a boxing wilderness. However he’s showed his credentials once again in impressive recovery fights and it won’t be a surprise if he claims a world title in the New Year. Watch this space.
