A US magazine for pre-teen girls is under fire for publishing an article featuring swimsuit tips for its readers.

Parents of readers of Discovery Girls have complained about the article, “What Swimsuit Best Suits You?” claiming that its advice is body-shaming to impressionable young girls.

The spread, captured in a now-viral photograph published on Twitter, shows cartoon girls divided into categories: curvy on top, straight up & down, and rounder in the middle.

One swimsuit suggested for “straight up and down” readers calls for “add[ing] curves.” For “rounder in the middle” girls, high-waisted bottoms are suggested for coverage.

Parents have chimed in on social media to express their offense that such a mature article would be published in a magazine that is aimed for girls aged eight to 12.

Founder and publisher Catherine Lee posted via Facebook that she agreed that the article was in bad taste and apologized for its inclusion in the issue.
