Sheffield student killed in road collision

A 30-year-old man has been arrested following the death of a University of Sheffield student.

A male student in his 20s riding a bicycle was involved in a collision with a blue Ford Transit van around 9.30pm on Monday evening, in the student area of Crookes.

The van allegedly failed to stop at the scene and later collided into stationary vehicles in the Walkley area, in west Sheffield.

Police found the van in the Stannington area, near the Peak District.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed: "A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs and causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs."

Debora Green, Head of Student Support and Wellbeing at the University of Sheffield, said: “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the death of one of our students. Our thoughts are with his friends and family. We are doing what we can to support his family, friends and our staff.”

The student has yet to be formally identified.
