Following the release of IDLES ‘Danny Nedelko’ in ode to frontman of Bristol punk band Heavy Lungs, the raucous four-piece have naturally returned the favour with the rousing ‘Blood Brother’, in commemoration of IDLES frontman Joe Talbot.

Announcing the single the band took to Twitter in outpour to Joe, “His kindness, His ferouisiousness, His resilience, Joe is my blood brother”. The single’s lyrics reflect this sense of comradeship, as Nedelko yelps “Your kindness sealed all the cracks / Carried me out of the lion’s mouth”, manifesting the sense of sanctuary that companionship can bring between people.

‘Blood Brother’ is a pulp of an impounding bass, guitar bouncing between detachment and unity and the gruff tones of Nedelko’s delivery style. Lyrically it’s full of disillusionment, a self-reflection of the other “I hope you realise / I’m for Christmas not for life” Nedelko quips, upon the displacement of UK immigrants he knows all too well. Identifying the sense of disillusionment that permeates and unites the nation, Nedelko barks “Life is pain brother / But we know that”.

Instinctively, the track will be released exclusively as a split 7” with IDLES ‘Danny Nedelko’ on Partisan records, from the 30th of November. In the meantime, check out ‘Blood Brothers’ and make sure to catch Heavy Lungs supporting IDLES on tour this month.
