Hear This: The Desert - Gone

Spearheaded by the South West masterminds Massive Attack and Portishead, trip-hop was at its zenith in the early 1990s. Now in 2018, we’re more likely to hear an air horn than a breakbeat sample. That is until The Desert entered the scene. As they gear up for the release of a new EP via Funnel Music, the four-piece from Bristol have given us an earthy yet expansive production ‘Gone’. It’s a tale of love and loss, desperation and mental torment that's suffused with grand piano sections, space-jazz atmospherics and Western-style picked guitars. Speaking ahead of the release, the band said: "'Gone' is about losing something or someone abruptly and how that can make you go a bit crazy. Gina's voice is quite hoarse in the recording, which helps convey the desperation & frustration. There's also a kind of excitement in that 'fuck it' feeling." ‘Gone’ prickles the skin with its icy, broken beats and Gina Leonard’s behind-the-red-curtain vocals, but still succeeds in filling the space with an uplifting and positive glow. The new EP is expected next year. In the meantime, listen to the moon-stricken single now.
