Lana Del Rey has dropped the first of two “end of summer tracks” in collaboration with Bleachers’ Jack Antonoff. 'Mariners Apartment Complex' is the singers’ first release since her 2017 album Lust for Life, and features Del Rey’s captivating vocals with lyrics alluding to sadness and romance that she whispers as much as she sings: it's a prevalent style in her music that commands you to listen. The track features accompanying visuals produced by Del Rey’s sister, Chuck, who shot the video entirely in black and white using vintage film offering a raw, DIY edge. Last year, Antonoff, who produced the track, warned that his presence may be distracting. But that is simply not the case. In true Del Rey fashion, the song still oozes seductiveness and longing and is laced with the trademark psychedelic aesthetic and poetic undertones that Del Rey always manages to deliver in her music. The 70s-style ballad is infused with swooning notes of the acoustic guitar and piano that unlocks layers of harmony and tragedy, to reveal a sound that has evolved massively from her breakout album, Born to Die. After revealing on BBC Radio one that her upcoming Antonoff-produced album will be released next year as well as a self-published poetry book, the singer has given us all a scrumptious taste of what’s to come.
